3 Steps Involved In Book Printing

From the initial document, right up to the binding, book printing is a complicated, and exacting, process.

Saturday, May 17, 2008

Every day, companies who are involved in book printing turn out thousands of books. The book printing process is long and complicated, but people all around the world enjoy the results. From the beginning steps of book printing, the written word begins to undergo a thorough process of transformation, leaving the author's hands and coming back as a finished and bound book.

After a writer has turned in a manuscript, the process of book printing begins. The first steps involve proofreading and checking the manuscript. Once those are done, the real work begins. There are several methods of book printing, many involving different beginning processes. The manuscript can be typed into a computer, where it will then become printed. It could also be engraved into plates that will stamp the pages with ink, creating the letters and words on the page!

Once the manuscript has been prepared, the book is ready to begin the actual book printing stages. This is where a giant press runs book paper through it, receiving each page in turn. These presses are specialized to print books, though there are several ways. There could be one small press for each page, producing thousands of copies that will be combined with the other pages in the book, and then bound. More common than this is the method of printing each page in order, thus creating one complete book during the printing process.

Once the pages are done, the book printing moves to the binding stage. This stage varies depending on whether the book is hard covered or soft covered. If the book has a hard cover; the binding is made by using a piece of cheesecloth with the pages glued to it, and then the cheesecloth is glued to the cover. Soft cover books are made by a similar method, but without the hard cover, and generally with something other than cheesecloth.

This is a very simple explanation of the book printing process. Unfortunately, because there are so many complexities and stages, it is difficult to put into only a few short words. Book printing is an interesting subject, and more information can always be found by searching the Internet, if you are interested.
