Founded in 1813, the Government Printing Office is one of the oldest institutions in the United States. The Government Printing Office was started in order to help distribute information to the public. Much of the information you may find on the different aspects of what is going on within the government were printed or published by the Government Printing Office.
The Government Printing Office is responsible for circulation materials on the three branches of government. This could include anything from a proposed bill in Congress, all the way to the 9/11 Commission Report. This information is distributed in one of two ways, either in printed form, or electronically. Much of the information is housed electronically, available via web access to anyone who wishes to view it, free of charge.
The Government Printing Office prints much of their information in the standard fashion. This information can then be distributed to individuals, and other institutions. Many libraries nationwide participate in a program that allows them to receive publications from the Government Printing Office. Individuals can also obtain these same documents for a small fee, usually just the cost of printing.
Because the Government Printing Office is run much like a business would be, they do have to have income of some fashion. While they are not out to make a profit, they do attempt to cover the costs of printing and maintaining information. This is why their printed materials carry a small fee. This fee is only enough to cover the cost of materials and printing, including employee wages.
The Government Printing Office is one of the most important institutions our government sponsors. Without the Government Printing Office, many Americans would be clueless as to what is really going on within our government.
