Gutenberg's printing press was the first moveable type printing press in the history of the world. Johannes Gutenberg's printing press was invented in 1436, forever changing the face of the literature. The first book ever printed on Gutenberg's printing press was the now famous Gutenberg bible. The bible was also the first massively produced book in the world.
Gutenberg was a German goldsmith and part-time inventor. In his middle years, he invented the printing press. Gutenberg's printing press was made by using handset moveable metal letters to push ink onto a sheet of paper. This process enabled Gutenberg to print an entire book many times faster than it would have taken a traditional scribe to write the book. This invention made literature widely available, instead of it being the sole domain of the aristocracy, as it had been before his invention.
If you really think about it, Gutenberg's printing press has influenced every aspect of our lives. You are on the Internet right now. If the printing press was never invented, how could the Internet exist? Have you read a newspaper or magazine lately? Without the printing press, you couldn't read them. We would still be sitting around writing books by hand if the printing press had never come into existence.
Gutenberg's printing press was the foundation for all modern presses. Even up until a hundred years ago, the same basic principle was still used to produce literature. Only in the last century has the design been dramatically improved, recently becoming the giant automated machines and presses that are used to print books, magazines, newspapers, and other literature today.
