3 Tasks Involved In Prepress

Prepress technicians are responsible for some of the most important stages in the printing process. It doesn't matter if you are printing a newspaper, or company letterhead, or something else entirely; the prepress stages are what enable you to print anything! Most small companies do not have dedicated people that only perform prepress tasks, but the larger companies can have dozens of people responsible for prepress stages only. The prepress process covers many tasks, some of which will be discussed here.
Depending on the type of printing to be done, the prepress process may include preparing printing plates. These plates are what are used to actually print the text or graphics on the paper. There are several methods for these plates to stamp the paper, including placing a sheet of inked ribbon between the paper and the plate, and having the plate press down on the paper. The raised lettering will then push the inked ribbon onto the paper. Preparing these plates can involve typesetting, or even carving of plates for pictures!
The prepress process includes taking an unfinished document from a computer and preparing it for printing. This could include making sure the page is properly aligned, and that the side tabs are spaced evenly. If one of these parameters were off just a little bit, it would cause the entire print to be ruined. This portion of prepress could also include the article being re-formatted into a type of computer file that a printer could access!
The prepress process is usually handled by someone trained in all the aspects of preparing documents, printing plates, and machinery for the printing process. This person could be someone who handles other aspects of the printing process, or an employee who exclusively handles the prepress process.
Without the prepress stage of printing, nothing could be done, which is why the prepress stages are some of the most important. Without proper prepress preparation, documents and pictures would not come out right, and people would be very upset that their printing turned out wrong.
